Probably the most widely used home remedy for a cough is honey and lemon in tea. Millions use it and get relief from colds and coughs.

Extracted ginger juice mixed with honey is another remedy for coughs.

Hot milk and honey before bedtime also is effective in easing irritation in the throat.

Cardamom is effective as well. It has the properties of relieving excessive phlegm, bile and breathing disorders. Cardamom causes has volatile oils which not only have anti-bacterial properties but also help the body naturally expel phlegm. You can burn a small amount of it and mix it with honey and ghee or clarified butter to get relief from a dry cough. Or you can simply chew it for a while for cough relief. Or just crush a few seeds, put it in a sieve and more hot water through it. Drink it throughout the day.

Ginger also helps with coughs as it suppresses the cough reflex and can be an effective remedy for a dry cough.

Many also report getting cough relief from boiling a couple cloves of garlic in milk and drinking it before bed time.
