Home Remedies for Earache

Ear infections afflict millions every year in fact over 7 million American suffer from them every year. (That's about 2.5 % annually.) Although infants and those exposed constantly to wet conditions make up the bulk of those who suffer from this condition.

In general there are two type of ear infections. The first type which is found in the middle of the ear usually afflicts children and infants. Typical symptoms will be pain and itching in the ear often accompanied with a discharge from the ear. Reduced hearing ability and fever are other common symptoms. The chief culprit is blockage of the Eustachian tube. This causes fluid build up in the ear and the resulting pain.

The other most common type occurs in the outer ear and is the result of a fungal infection in the outer ear. Fungi thrive in wet environments so those who are afflicted with this are usually over-exposed to a wet environment like swimming pools etc. This is why they call it swimmers ear.

Common home remedies for ear infections are: apple cider vinegar. You can tilt your head and put a few drops into the infected ear. Many swear by this for getting rid of ear infections quickly.

Hydrogen Peroxide: hydrogen peroxide kills and kills quickly. You can use a 3% grade of peroxide that you can find in any pharmacy. Peroxide is a wonderful antibiotic. Tilt your head and put several drops in. Wait for it to foam up good. (The foaming action indicates that it is at work killing bacteria.) Then tilt your head back to drain it.

Lobelia extract also has anti-bacterial properties and can help clear up infections pretty quickly. Just add a few drops to the infected ear, wait a few minutes then tilt your head back to allow it to run back out.

Olive oil or sweet oil also helps. It softens ear wax thus getting rid of the blockage in the ear. Add a few drops wait for it to penetrate the ear wax and then remove it with a swab.

No matter which home remedy you try to relieve the symptoms make sure that there aren't any holes in the ear drum otherwise the remedy that you're using to relieve the pain, if infected and if it gets into the inner ear, can cause a pretty serious infection that will definitely require a specialist to take care of.
